Progressive Engineering is the Lead Engineering Consultant for the redevelopment of the East Village area in downtown Calgary. It is part of a major revitalization project coined "The Rivers" by our Mayor, Dave Bronconnier. The Project is estimated at $140 Million for the necessary upgrades to the current infrastructure and utilities before residential and commercial development can take place.
Redevelopment of the area presents many challenges including upgrading 100 year old public infrastructure, raising the area to the 1:100 year flood levels for the Bow River, dealing with soils and groundwater impacted by past industrial and commercial uses, keeping existing traffic flows and services (for both the local and adjacent downtown areas) operational through the expected five-year construction period.
Progressive Engineering, part of the Trow Group of Companies, has been the lead engineering consultant for redevelopment of the East Village in downtown Calgary since the comprehensive planning phase led to an approved Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP) in 2005.
Upgrades to the infrastructure, valued at about $130 Million, are necessary for new residential and commercial development to occur – which will transform the neglected area to a vibrant community of 11,000 residents. Plans for the unique and sustainable community include the construction of a stormwater wetland to remove sediment from the existing urban catchment area, integration of open spaces including the river front, Fort Calgary, and two new park areas, pedestrian friendly streets, and preservation of historical buildings.
A special emphasis is being placed on the streetscape environment. Progressive Engineering's Landscape Architecture Group is leading the detailed design and construction of the upgraded streetscapes, based on concepts developed by a leading Toronto architectural firm.
