The Beacon Hill Shopping Centre is a pedestrian oriented retail hub located in northwest Calgary and comprises 29.7 hectares in a hilled area. The area was once beyond current servicing by the City of Calgary with sanitary, storm, or water.
Progressive Engineering has been involved in the development since the early planning stages through to construction, including the preliminary engineering, stormwater management, detailed engineering, field services, and landscaping services for the development.
To accommodate the development, the hill was cut down by 18 metres and used to build up the surrounding area up to 22 metres of fill. In total, 2.5 million cubic metre of dirt was moved to prepare the site for servicing. A water line had to be extended across the Transportation and Utility Corridor (TUC) and sanitary and stormwater connections had to be made to a different location, approximately one kilometre away.
Access to the site included extension of 1.8km of major roadway.
Once all of the external infrastructure had been extended to the site, the next challenge was to service all 750,000 square feet of commercial retail space.
Additional engineering and logistic challenges included the construction and landscaping of a 15 acre environmental reserve, extensive efforts to coordinate additional road improvements with the City and the Province.
